Celebrating Growth and Building Positive Family Partnerships
In a recent district project, we faced a challenge shared by many schools—how to truly engage families who had often only experienced negative interactions with educators. Instead of another meeting or flyer, we created something different: a community celebration of growth and excellence.
Families, teachers, and community vendors came together in a joyful learning space designed to highlight student achievement and strengthen relationships built on trust, not tension. The event recognized students not just for grades, but for perseverance, kindness, and progress—the qualities that show true growth.
Teachers and district leaders were invited to nominate students who inspired them, and their words captured the heart of why this work matters. Below, you’ll find some of the beautiful things they shared about their students—enjoy.

LEADERSHIP & INITIATIVE
“ He demonstrates outstanding leadership both in and out of the classroom. He is proactive in reaching out to his peers, offering support whenever needed, and is always eager to lend a helping hand. His initiative goes beyond expectations, as he often volunteers to assist his teacher without even being asked. Additionally, He is involved in various extracurricular activities, where his leadership abilities are evident. He maintains a positive attitude, contributing to a supportive and motivating environment for everyone around him. ”
“ I nominated this student because he is demonstrating growth in his behavior and language. Currently he is in a self-contained resource class and he has been asking for placement in a co-teaching classroom. We have been talking about transition to 9th grade and he is looking forward to high school. His teachers note his language has been very respectful. During a recent classroom fight he told me he minded his business, did not respond and even told students to stop fighting. He is doing an awesome job. ”
BEHAVIOR & TRANSITION READINESS
BEHAVIOR & SELF-CONTROL
“ He has done an amazing job in regard to controlling his anger when upset. He is no longer taking matters/situations on his own, by getting upset, storming out of classes. He will think before he responds. This has shown much growth in him. ”
“ He has overcome a lot of family and academic setbacks. He has really worked hard on managing his behavior and emotions. A full 180 from last year. He is working very hard on his course work and staying in good academic and behavior standing. He is now displaying great leadership qualities and helping other students to do the right thing daily. He models what is expected of other students. I am so very proud of him. ”

Despite the challenges she faces, she remains committed to learning the content and pushing through any obstacles. Her determination to keep going, even when the material is difficult, is a true testament to her strong work ethic. Moreover, her willingness to assist her peers, even while grappling with her own challenges, showcases her selflessness and dedication to helping others. ”
“ She has grown so much over her years at middle school. She has persevered through trauma, challenges and stressors in her life. She looks out for others and consciously works to stay out of drama and negative peer situations—choosing better and more mature responses. ”
PERSERVERANCE & RESILIANCE
“ This student started high school with many challenges. He missed 30 plus days. The last month of the semester he came to school everyday. With tons of supports. He started doing this work and out of the 7 classes he will pass 4 out of the 7 classes. with the support of the school we have a plan for the other class with course recovery. ”
“ This student has shown tremendous growth in behavior at school. He has had extreme adversity in his personal life and has shown perseverance and his transformation is inspirational. ”
